Ya’ll Are Doing Y2K Wrong!

Every time I open TikTok, I see someone with the most basic outfit every created using the hashtag “#y2k”. It occurred to me that not everyone knows true y2k fashion! Just because you throw on a pair of low-rise jeans, a crop top, & a bandana, does not mean you are embodying the fashion of that time period.

Here are 4 stylistic choices that I wish people would incorporate into their y2k outfits:

1. Dresses/Skirts over Jeans

I know this is a very controversial take, but I love when people put pants under their pleated skirts, especially when these pants are bootcut jeans. I don’t know why, but it just scratches my brain in the right way. By adding jeans under your skirt, you can elevate a very basic outfit. I hope that this trend continues for many years to come!!

2. Fur coats

Fur coats are probably my favorite aspect of y2k culture. Whether they are ankle length, waist-length, or super cropped, I love every single one of them. You can find jackets like these at Zara, Michael Kors, Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Gap, or if you’re willing to spend more $$$, Dsquared.

3. Purses

Purses are one thing that I do think the girlies are doing right in the y2k department. With the revamp of Coach, as they return to that look they once had in the early 2000’s, has come the revamp of y2k bag culture. Additionally, the popularization of bag charms like the famous coach cherry🍒, or simply an initial or heart are all reminiscent of bag culture during that time.

4. Headscarves

As I said in the beginning, bandanas are out! Headscarves are in! The unique patterns and various colors on a headscarf add a pop of color to your outfit and make your outfit more interesting.

Headscarves are like chic, more fashionable versions of bandanas. And you can wear them a variety of ways. You can tie it in the back like a bandana (either over or under your hair), underneath the chin (in an old Hollywood kinda way), or leave it untied and place it underneath your hat, particularly a baseball cap. However, you choose to wear it,

If you’re going to do Y2K, please, please, please, do it right! I look forward to seeing Gen Z revisit fashion aspects of other years & decades, preferably either 2016 or the 70s as a whole.

Sincerely, your favorite trendy girl,
